How has USLI’s House of Worship product changed in regard to our underwriting stance and property?
While evaluating our property position, we considered our concentration of business geographically, the condition and ages of the buildings we are writing, and the perils impacting our book of business. Due to changing wind patterns and new areas being impacted by hail storms, we will be making the following changes to help weather the storm:
- We are no longer offering building coverage for buildings over 75 years old and/or roofs over 25 years old
- We are reviewing our current wind/hail deductible strategy and determining areas that require an increase (e.g., Dallas/Fort Worth counties or states where we need to strengthen our utilization)
- We are now writing houses of worship with greater than $1 million total insurable value in property on a non-admitted basis to achieve more rate flexibility; we are piloting this in a few states (e.g., Texas and California)
- We have improved our underwriting process to more thoroughly evaluate protection class, condition of roof and structure
We appreciate your nonprofit and house of worship business. We have seen success in writing tenant-based churches and newer, well-maintained structures. Abuse and molestation and pastoral professional are included under general liability, and we can consider hired and non-owned auto, inland marine and directors and officers under one quote. Please contact your regional nonprofit underwriter for more information on products in your area.
USLI has been writing churches for over 20 years and intends to continue to be a market for your house of worship business. We feel that these changes are critical to ensuring our ability to do so long term.
