What Are Civic, Social and Hobby Clubs?

Civic, social and hobby clubs serve a critical function in our communities: Bringing people together. How are these various groups defined from an insurance perspective? All three can exhibit a wide variety of operations and exposures.

Social Clubs

Social clubs, also known as fraternal organizations, are private membership groups that can resemble restaurants or bars/taverns. Examples include Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legions, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Elks Lodges. USLI is a great option for these risks that can be complicated due to liquor liability, cooking exposures and older buildings. Some clubs feature entertainment, dancing, bingo and gaming machines.

Hobby Clubs

These are common interest groups that are united by a love or appreciation for something. Examples can include book clubs, hiking clubs, quilting guilds, music appreciation and motorcycle and car clubs. Exposures are typically limited to regular meetings of the membership, networking activities and special events like conventions or fundraisers.

Civic Organizations

These groups can carry a broad definition but are typically seen as being formed to impact or serve their local communities or a cause. They may even be politically motivated. Exposures are typically focused on meetings of the members, service projects like neighborhood cleanups or special events like town halls or fundraisers.
