Importance of Occurrence-based Abuse Coverage

counselor meeting

Abuse and molestation (A&M) coverage is a critical line of coverage for nonprofit organizations, particularly for the nonprofits that work with vulnerable populations such as kids, individuals with disabilities and others that face higher abuse risk. While many carriers are shifting to a claims-made form for abuse and molestation coverage, USLI is writing this coverage on an occurrence-based form. Below are some of the benefits to an occurrence-based form.

  1. A&M claims are typically considered as a long tail claim, meaning the incident may not be reported until years after it occurred. With an occurrence-based policy, coverage can be triggered as long as the incident took place during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is filed.
  2. If writing on claims-made forms, coverage would need to be in force and continuously renewed with the same carrier to ensure coverage would be available for the historical entirety of their operation.
  3. There is no need to purchase an extended reporting period or tail coverage.

Most of our Nonprofit Package products include the A&M coverage with options for a low-cost sublimit or full limits up to $1 million. Some examples include:

  • Booster clubs and PTAs
  • Houses of worship
  • Sports teams, camps and clinics
  • Theatrical or performing arts groups
  • Senior activity centers
  • Youth community centers
